Pinewood Derby Rules for the 2008 Pack 632 Pinewood Derby to be held on Saturday, January 26, 2008 in the Wilson Hill Gym.

First and foremost, parents and sons should work together on the car.
Have fun! This is not supposed to be a stressful thing and no one will
think any more or less of the family based upon the performance of the car. The
boys just want to see their car go down the track!

  1. All cars must pass inspection to qualify to race. The inspection
    points are:

    • The car must have been made during Dec. 2007 - Jan. 2008
    • Width - shall not exceed 2 3/4 inches (width at the wheels may not be modified; it must be the same
      as the original kit)
    • Length - shall not exceed 7 inches
    • Height - 5 inches maximum
    • Weight - shall not exceed 5 ounces (as close to 5 oz as possible
      is best!)
    • Axles, wheels, and body wood shall be those provided in the kit
(burrs may be removed from the wheels, but the shape shall not be modified).
    • Wheel bearings, washers and bushings are prohibited (DON’T use
      wet lubricants).
    • The car shall not ride on any kind of springs
    • Any details added must be within length, width, and weight
      limits.
    • The car must be freewheeling with no starting devices
    • No loose materials of any kind (such as lead shot) are allowed in the car.
    • The official number must be clearly marked on the car
    • The forward most part of the car shall contact the starting pin
(extends 1 inch up from the track surface),
which is centered in each lane. Cars may not extend
      beyond the starting pin.
    • There must be at least 3/8″ clearance underneath the car so that
the card will clear the track guides. If you use axle guides that are pre-cut in the pine
block, you will not have to worry about this requirement.
  2. Boys should first report with their cars to the registration/inspection area. Each heat will be announced.
Drivers will take their cars from the display area to the track start location when their name or car number is announced. All other people must remain behind the barrier.
  3. The starter will make sure the cars are on the track properly and
    then will start the race.
  4. Electronic timing will be used. Standings will be based upon composite time. Drivers will race an equal number of heats in each lane to remove track bias.
  5. If a car leaves the track, runs out of its lane, interferes with another car, loses an axle, etc., the heat will be rerun. If the same car gets into trouble on the second run, the contestant is disqualified and, if another car is interfered with, the heat will be rerun a third time without the disqualified car.
  6. When the results of each race are recorded, the drivers will return their cars to the display area and return to their seats. Cars will remain on display for judging while not involved in a race.
  7. The top three finishers from each of the Tigers, Wolves, Bears, and
Webelos dens will race for the Pack Championship.
  8. Parents and their sons shall have FUN making and racing their car!
